The hen was walking around in the yard as she was looking for different things that could be eaten. Sometimes she found a worm, sometimes it was a wheat seed and at other times it was something else. But whatever it was, she enjoyed it a lot as hens really enjoy their food. She did not have too many things to worry about, because her little chickens were grown up and had already gone to look for their own prosperity. So now it was time to relax after months of hard parental care and attention. The hen was walking slowly and proudly, tilting her gracious head from one side to the other, when something interesting caught her sight. After some time she decided to go and visit her very good friend – the nanny-goat. They both knew each other for a long time and it was always a pleasure to have a short or a long chat. The nanny-goat liked the hen, because she found her very amusing and funny, especially the way the hen walked and besides that, the nanny-goat found her a good heart mother as she, herself was. The hen liked the nanny-goat partly, because of the same reasons and partly, because secretly in her mind she had always wanted to be a nanny-goat and sometimes she even nobly envied her. Why she did that I can not tell you, but hens’ mentality is no less complicated than our own human one. Anyway, the nanny-goat never suspected this and friendship between them was going flawlessly.
The hen headed for the other end of the yard, near the barn, where the nanny-goat liked to stay. She soon saw her and hurried ahead. The nanny-goat was very pleased to see her old friend and greeted her politely:
“Hallo my dear hen! How are you today?”
The hen replied cordially:
“Hallo my dearest friend! I am pretty good. And I wish the same for you.” and after that she continued “What are you doing anyway?”
“Well, to be honest, I was thinking about my little kiddies. I was wondering if they are fine and if they are doing ok, you know.” said the nanny-goat “They were my little angels and I love them very much. I still remember their first steps and their singing voices when they were calling on me. Oh, I miss them so much”
The hen stood silent for a while as she was recollecting her own little chickens, moving around her, squeaking and hiding under her warm and secure wings. Yes, now she didn’t have to take care of them and had plenty of time just for herself but she also loved them very much and these memories made her eyes wet. After a minute or two, she replied:
“Yes my dear friend, our children are gone and we can only keep in our hearts the great moments that we shared together. But you know that happens all the time. Do you remember when you were a little kid and then you grew up and left your home. It was hard and disappointing at first, but then the life became beautiful, sometimes bad and not easy-going. So we can only be happy about our own kids and hope they will find the right way. Do you think they will?”
The nanny-goat squinted her eyes and said firmly:
“I am sure they will. We were the best parents and teachers to them. Yes, I confess that sometimes I was really strict and punished them, when it was needed, but sooner or later they will find out it was the right way. I am proud of them as my children and I hope one day they will be proud of their own children. We gave them the foundation and now they have to build up their own life.”
“You are as wise as ever and that’s why we are friends” said the hen “Now it is much easier for me after your words, so let’s walk around and enjoy ourselves together”
Both of them walked side by side and they smiled and laughed.
